Interview: Meet New Mixologist Tyler French at The Mix Up Bar in Phoenix, Arizona!
We invite you all to get to know one of the newest "spirited" personalities behind the bar at The Mix Up: Tyler French.
Having mixed and stirred at some of this country's top cocktail bars, from most recently Denver and San Diego, and beyond, now to Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, Royal Palms Resort and Spa is proud to have talented mixologist Tyler French serving you at The Mix Up Bar.
Come, say hello:
1. Where do you find cocktail inspiration?
Usually from the guest. There are times when I am creating menus with many different palates and styles in mind, but I love making cocktails off the cuff for someone who is sitting in front of me, and wants to have a unique experience.
2. What are some cocktail trends you wish more people would pay attention to?
Making great drinks quickly, without pretension. I think that as the craft cocktail bars are evolving around the country, there are a lot of bartenders getting back to the basics of just being a good bartender. That means really making your guests feel at home, and offering up more than just food and beverage.
3. What's your favorite spirit?
Right now I am drinking a lot of bourbon, but Thomas Handy Rye Whiskey is definitely my overall favorite label these days.
4. Phoenix is all sun and usually warm – what are some refreshing go-to cocktails you personally love and always recommend?
I really enjoy a well-prepared and simple daiquiri, or if you have a taste for something a little more complex, The Last Word is one of my favorite cocktails.
5. What do you like about being a bartender?
My favorite part about being a bartender is meeting interesting people from all walks of life. There is something awesome about sharing stories over a round of drinks.
6. What brought you to the Phoenix area, and The Mix Up?
Family had a lot to do with my move to Phoenix, but I love the desert. The sky is really big out here, and I already spent my share of cold winters growing up in Michigan. I pursued a career at The Mix Up after a really positive endorsement of Executive Chef Paul McCabe, from a good friend in San Diego. I couldn't be more excited about teaming up with him and the rest of the amazingly talented staff that has come together to re-launch T.Cook's and The Mix Up.
7. What's a cocktail that's tricky to get "just right"?
I think the martini is one of the trickiest cocktails to get just right. There are so many different avenues you can take that drink down, but you really have to make sure you are giving your guest a drink that they will really be pleased with.
8. When you walk into a dive bar, what's your go-to drink?
Ice-cold bottle of Budweiser.
